If you want to explore the Snyderverse without working your way through every DC movie released around the same time, there is a much simpler route.
The core story follows Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman and the formation of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
For this guide, I use “Snyderverse” in a practical sense: the central viewing path built around Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, with Wonder Woman as a natural extension.
You do not need to watch the entire DCEU first.
The Snyderverse watch order at a glance
For the essential route:
Man of Steel (2013) → Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — Ultimate Edition (2016) → Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
For a slightly more complete experience:
Man of Steel → Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition → Wonder Woman → Zack Snyder’s Justice League
For a first viewing, the expanded version works particularly well.
1. Start with Man of Steel
Man of Steel is the true starting point.
Released in 2013 and directed by Zack Snyder, the movie introduces Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman and establishes the world that will later expand through Batman v Superman and Justice League.
David S. Goyer wrote the screenplay from a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan.
You do not need to watch any earlier Superman movie beforehand, and you do not need prior comic-book knowledge.
This is a fresh incarnation of the character.

Why start here?
Because events in Man of Steel directly influence the characters and conflicts that follow.
Without spoiling anything, Batman v Superman makes much more sense when you have already experienced what happened in Man of Steel rather than encountering those events only through references.
Watch: Man of Steel (2013)
2. Watch Batman v Superman next — but choose the Ultimate Edition
Three years later, Zack Snyder continued the story with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Henry Cavill returns as Superman.
Ben Affleck makes his first appearance in this continuity as Bruce Wayne / Batman.
Gal Gadot also makes her debut as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman.
But there is one important choice to make before watching it.
There are two main cuts of the movie.
For a first Snyderverse viewing, choose:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — Ultimate Edition.
The Ultimate Edition runs for 182 minutes, roughly 30 minutes longer than the theatrical cut.
Those restored scenes do not simply add more action. They expand several investigations, motivations and cause-and-effect connections that help the story breathe.
We have a separate article dedicated entirely to why this version exists and what it changes.
Do you need to watch both versions?
No.
If you later become interested in how editing changed the movie, the theatrical version is worth comparing.
But for a first viewing, watching the Ultimate Edition directly is the simpler option and gives you the more complete version of the story.

3. Where should Wonder Woman go?
This is the one movie in the guide that needs a little explanation.
Most of Wonder Woman takes place long before Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.
Even so, I would not watch it first.
Diana Prince is introduced into this cinematic continuity through Batman v Superman. Watching Wonder Woman afterward lets you meet the character there before exploring her past in greater depth.
The 2017 movie was directed by Patty Jenkins, not Zack Snyder.
Snyder served as a producer and shares story credit with Allan Heinberg and Jason Fuchs.
That makes Wonder Woman a very natural addition to a Snyderverse marathon, but it is not essential to the three-film Snyder-directed core.
So you have two options:
Core route:
Batman v Superman → Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Expanded route:
Batman v Superman → Wonder Woman → Zack Snyder’s Justice League
For a first watch, I prefer the expanded route.
4. Finish with Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Next comes Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Released in 2021, Snyder’s version brings Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash together as the story expands beyond the events of Batman v Superman.
Steppenwolf is the immediate threat, while DeSaad and Darkseid reveal that something much larger exists beyond him.

This is the version of Justice League you should use to finish the Snyderverse route.
Should you watch Justice League (2017) before the Snyder Cut?
No.
And most importantly, do not treat the two movies as consecutive chapters.
Justice League (2017) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) are alternative versions of broadly the same point in the story, built from the same production history but ultimately shaped into very different films.
For the Snyderverse viewing path, go directly from Batman v Superman to Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
If you become interested in the complicated history behind the movies, the 2017 version is fascinating to watch afterward as a comparison.
Our behind-the-scenes series covers exactly how one production ultimately resulted in two radically different movies.
Do you need to watch the entire DCEU?
No.
The wider DCEU contains many more films, including Suicide Squad, Aquaman, Shazam! and others.
Some expand the same broader continuity.
But you do not need all of them to understand Snyder’s central storyline.
If your goal is simply to follow the progression from Superman’s arrival to Batman’s response and eventually the formation of the Justice League, the shorter route works perfectly well.
That is the advantage of starting with the Snyderverse core rather than trying to turn your first viewing into a complete DCEU marathon.
So what is the best Snyderverse watch order?
For a first viewing:
Man of Steel → Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition → Wonder Woman → Zack Snyder’s Justice League
If you only want the movies directly directed by Zack Snyder:
Man of Steel → Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition → Zack Snyder’s Justice League

After that, you can explore the wider DCEU, compare the two versions of Justice League, or dive into the remarkable history of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.
But when you are starting out, there is no need to watch everything.
Start with the story.
